Huge Saving On Your Roof When You Ditch Timber Battens And Purlins For Light Gauge Steel Battens

Traditionally, timber has always played such a crucial role in construction that it was almost unimaginable to concieve a building without the use of timber.

With less than 10% of Kenya being covered with trees, it is even more of a nightmare to imagine one more tree being cut down to get you timber trusses and battens.

Depending on your choice of roofing cover, the number of battens required might considerably increase your overall cost of construction for roofing works especially if  you have to get the right quality of timber for your roof.

While being a good construction material, timber’s inherent problems like rot, infestation and weakening over time beg for a more stable solution for your roofing works, steel.

Well not just stell, Light Gauge Steel.

Light gauge steel construction is very similar to wood framed construction in principle – the wooden framing members are replaced with thin steel sections. The steel sections used here are called cold formed sections, meaning that the sections are formed, or given shape at room temperature.

The battens come in Cap profiles with safety edges that make it easy and safe to handle on site.  They are made from thin sheets of steel coil, 0.55mm thick and are galvanized with Zinc coating to give them very long lasting.

The steel battens are available in two sizes, 40mm and 20mm (in depth). The difference between the two sizes is the maximum span and load they can handle.

Ideally, the 40mm battens would be used on the roof where trusses span no more than 1.5m and can be used to support any kind of roof cover, clay tiles, metal tiles, profiled roofing sheets etc.

The 20mm battens can be used on the roof but the trusses would have to be more closer, no more than 1m apart. These can also be used to support your ceiling by being fixed on the underside of your trusses.

The battens can be used on either Timber trusses or Steel trusses. If timber, they would be nailed to the timber roof structure and fixed using self tapping screws for a steel truss.

The battens cost Kes 110 per meter for the 20mm and Kes 156 per meter for the 40mm battens. The standard supply length is 5.8m though you can get specific lengths supplied on your order at TechnoConstruct (K) Ltd.
